Warehouse Workload Monitoring Application
Description
Altoros has developed a warehousing application with client-server administration, a Web portal for remote agents, and a mobile client for warehouse workers for real-time workload monitoring.
The customer
Company offers premium services that include logistics and transportation in almost any industry, and in all 48 states in USA and Canada.
The need
The customer, a supplier of logistics applications, came up with an idea to create a warehousing application for mid-size manufacturing and distribution companies that would combine a Client-Server administration part, a Web portal for remote partners and agents, and a mobile client for warehouse workers. Using mobile devices with barcode readers was the key to decreasing errors in accounting and enabling effective real-time resources and workload monitoring.
The challenges
The system for a large number of customers required a lot of customization, which had to be performed in short timeframes, on the spot, and even in haste. Each custom project developed for one client had to be the basis for the other. The team had to maintain the quality of the core product and provide sufficient time for bug fixing while keeping a high level of development productivity.
The solution
ASP.NET was selected for this development project because the client needed the highest scalability, reliability, and performance possible, all that ASP .NET can offer. Altoros dedicated a lot of time to developing standard features based on the roadmap. The team planed the work so that no considerable changes were made in the functional requirements the team received, and each module was thoroughly designed for future reuse. The quick and accurate work allowed Altoros to keep the product architecture clean and expandable. The system core was “friendly” to onsite developers who implemented customizations. As the result, the system allows local managers to collect requirements from customers and the project steering committee, and then decide whether to include the features into the roadmap or assign local resources for small customizations.
The outcome
Consafe Logistics focused in-house resources on core strategic business activities, while Altoros managed the software product life cycle. The company now sells Effect Warehouse to small and medium sized warehouses. The software product developed by Altoros is steadily gaining popularity, as the app quickly pays for itself. Better productivity, almost 100 % balance accuracy and better quality in picking processes bring considerable savings. The effects of real-time workload monitoring, traceability and shorter lead-times are vital improvements to the warehousing business.
